Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville

Roxie and Velma are putting on a show! Our production of Chicago focused on the idea of a vaudeville troupe telling Roxie and Velma’s story, visually keeping the fun and abstract costumes from 1920s vaudeville but adding in the modern sex appeal of burlesque. Roxie, Velma, Billy and Amos are playing themselves, everyone else is a chorus member that adds or subtracts costumes to play various roles. My research focused on vaudeville performers, the Cotton Club costumes, the original and revival production of Shuffle Along and the modern revival of burlesque. The silhouettes had a 20s flair but used modern fabrics with a sexy edge.
